Background of the study
The informal transport sector is a vital component of urban mobility and plays a significant role in local economic activities, particularly in areas where formal transport systems are inadequate. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, services such as motorbike taxis, minibuses, and shared rides are integral to daily commuting and commerce (Inyang, 2023). This sector provides affordable and flexible transportation options, generating employment and facilitating the movement of goods and people. Its economic impact is multifaceted, influencing income distribution, local business development, and urban growth (Etuk, 2024). However, operating in a regulatory grey area poses challenges such as safety risks, inconsistent service quality, and infrastructural constraints. The lack of formal oversight often leads to inefficiencies and potential conflicts between operators and authorities. This study evaluates the economic contributions of the informal transport sector in Uyo, focusing on job creation, income generation, and its role in urban economic dynamics. It also explores potential policy interventions to improve service delivery and safety, thereby maximizing the sector's benefits for the local economy.
Statement of the problem
Despite its importance, the informal transport sector in Uyo faces significant challenges that limit its economic impact. Inadequate regulation, safety issues, and infrastructural deficits contribute to operational inefficiencies and reduced service quality (Inyang, 2023). The absence of formal recognition and support from local authorities further exacerbates these problems, hindering the sector's potential to generate sustainable employment and stimulate economic growth (Etuk, 2024). These issues negatively affect both transport operators and commuters, ultimately impacting the overall urban economy. This study seeks to investigate these challenges and assess the economic contributions of the informal transport sector, with the goal of proposing policy recommendations to enhance its efficiency and safety.
Objectives of the study (3):
To evaluate the economic contributions of the informal transport sector in Uyo.
To identify the operational challenges faced by transport operators.
To propose policy recommendations for improving efficiency and safety.
Research questions (3):
What is the economic impact of the informal transport sector in Uyo?
What challenges do operators face in delivering consistent services?
How can policy interventions improve sector performance?
Research Hypotheses (3):
The informal transport sector significantly contributes to local economic activity.
Regulatory and infrastructural challenges hinder its performance.
Policy improvements will enhance the sector's economic impact.
Significance of the study
This study highlights the economic importance of the informal transport sector in Uyo and identifies challenges that limit its potential. Its findings will inform policymakers and urban planners on strategies to enhance service quality, safety, and regulatory oversight, thereby fostering sustainable urban development and economic growth (Inyang, 2023; Etuk, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the informal transport sector and its economic impact within Uyo Local Government Area, focusing on operational challenges and economic contributions.
Definitions of terms (3):
Informal Transport: Unregulated or semi-regulated transport services operating outside formal systems.
Economic Impact: The effect on local income generation and employment.
Urban Mobility: The efficiency with which residents move within an urban area.
